Ready to Hit the Trails - Biking in Eureka

With endless views, grabbing your helmet and jumping on a bike is one of the best ways to take in the incredibly bikeable streets and all that Eureka has to offer. With many different trail options, you are bound to find one that suits you, whether you’re more inclined to ride or walk. Whichever trail you choose, you are bound to make memories and enjoy the fresh air.

Eureka Waterfront Trail

The Eureka Waterfront Trail is a 6.5 mile stretch along the shores of Humboldt Bay. The trail extends the entire length of Eureka and is open to bikers and walkers, who you’ll find enjoying the peaceful and stunning views of the bay, sand dune system, salt marshes, and the redwood forest beyond. As you go along the trail, be sure to keep an eye out for interpretive signs that dot the trail highlighting different aspects of the area’s natural and cultural history. If the full 6.5 miles feels a bit intimidating, you can check out the Hikshari’ Trail, a 2.7-mile segment of the greater Waterfront Trail. The trail is dog-friendly provided they remain on a leash and is the perfect spot to enjoy an amazing view of the sunset or for bird watching.

Headwaters Forest

If a forest of sky-high trees and overgrown brush are more your speed, you can choose to head just 6 miles southeast of Eureka to Headwaters Forest, or stay in Eureka proper to visit Sequoia Park Forest and Garden.

At Headwaters Forest, hike among the old-growth redwoods and other natural plants and wildlife. Hikers can enjoy the full 11-mile roundtrip journey, while bicycles or those with dogs are allowed on the first 3-mile stretch. For those that do choose to take the full trail by foot, the last 2.5 miles wind underneath a closed tree canopy, ending at a small old-growth redwood grove.

Sequoia Park Forest and Garden

Sequoia Park Forest and Garden contain 67 acres and is bike and hike friendly. Take trails that travel through the iconic redwood forest where, just a few feet in, you will feel like you’ve been transported to an isolated rainforest. Enjoy exploring trails for all levels and marveling at the incredible nature that Eureka has to offer.
